This is a CT brain study showing dense, bilateral, symmetrical calcification in the brain parenchyma – which is distributed in the thalami, basal ganglia, periventricular white matter and centrum semiovale, and in the white matter of the cerebellum. The calcification at the periventricular white matter shows a ‘sun ray’ branching pattern.
These radiological features are characteristic of Primary Familial Brain Calcification (Fahr’s disease). I would look at any previous imaging for comparison. I would also ask about any known disorders of calcium regulation / parathyroid hormone disorder that might cause hypercalcaemia – to rule out a secondary cause. I would also ask about a family history of the disease.
Question:
How is Fahr’s disease inherited?
Fahr’s disease is a congenital disorder with most cases following an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance.
