This is an MRI dorsal spine study showing an intradural, extra-medullary lesion at the mid dorsal spine level – it shows high T2W and low T1W SI and it displaces and compresses the spinal cord to the right side. It does not grow through the intervertebral foramen and there is no bony erosion. It exhibits avid post contrast enhancement, which is heterogeneous and demonstrates internal non-enhancing areas; these likely represent cystic degeneration. This most likely represents a schwannoma.
The differential diagnosis includes neurofibroma and meningioma.
I would contact the referring physician in the first instance and recommend referral to the spine surgery service; these cases are typically managed by surgical excision as there is cord compression.
Question:
What is a schwannoma?
This is a benign tumour which arises from the Schwann cells of the nerve sheath.
